This year, at the Institute for Human Relations Inc., we will “observe” the July 4th weekend by reflecting on three documents, and we invite you to do the same.

At the Institute for Human Relations, Inc. we believe, “If we can relate, anything is possible!” This year we will “observe” the July 4th weekend by reflecting on three documents:

1. The Constitution of the United States of America.

Try approaching it as the Manual of Operations for the United States Government.

2. Fredrick Douglas’ “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”

76 years later, his forceful examination of the Constitution challenges us to think about the histories we tell, the values they teach, and if our actions match our aspirations.

3. “I Have a Dream” by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

111 years after Fredric Douglas’ speech, Dr. King’s forceful examination of the Constitution again challenges us to evaluate whether our actions match our aspirations.

How many times will we be blessed with heroes to reminded us of the gap between our actions and our aspirations? When will we listen? What will we tell our children?

On January 6, 2021, the world witnessed the gap.  Dr. King’s final book asks the essential question, “Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?”
